IMO Expert Lectures on Maritime Safety

On 15 October, students in the Master of Science in Maritime Affairs programme in Malmö had the opportunity to interact with Ms Aicha Cherif, Legal Officer at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Legal Affairs Office who delivered a lecture on “The Role of IMO in the Global System of Maritime Governance”.

Ms Cherif’s lecture focused on the role of IMO as global regulator on maritime affairs by explaining its structure as well as the treaty making and regulatory process. The significance of national implementation of IMO regulations, the acceptance and entry into force of amendments, more specifically, the explicit and the tacit acceptance procedure and the timeline of the amendments, were also presented. An additional area of focus included what is considered to be effective implementation. The lecture concluded with concrete examples of how IMO instruments might effectively be implemented at national level.

The Malmö MSc in Maritime Affairs is a 14-month programme with seven specializations: Maritime Education & Training; Maritime Energy Management; Maritime Law & Policy; Maritime Safety & Environmental Administration; Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management; Port Management, and Shipping Management & Logistics. Foundation studies are taught in the first term and cover the introductory knowledge that is fundamental to all activities in the maritime field. The three successive terms focus on specialization studies and a dissertation.
